It's Invasives Awareness Week! This week, we will be sharing different types of invasive species along with information on how they are harmful and what we can do to remove them. Invasive species pose a real threat to the native ecological environment, but by spreading awareness, we can all work to reduce this threat starting in our own yards and greenspaces. •

Today's featured invasive is giant hogweed. Giant hogweed is one of New York's most dangerous invasive plants and originates from Asia. This invasive poses not only an ecological threat, but a serious biological threat to humans as well. Unlike poison ivy, giant hogweed sap from a broken stem or crushed leaf or flower must come into contact with moist skin while under sunlight. This combination allows for phototoxic effects to occur causing skin irritation called "phytophotodermatitis." •

Giant hogweed's health impact may be more severe than its ecological impact, and for this reason it claims a spot on the federal noxious weed list. To control the spread of this invasive, physical removal combined with chemical control is most effective. If you find giant hogweed, NYS encourages you to call the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Giant Hogweed Hotline: at (845)-256-3111.

Today we are featuring garlic mustard. Garlic mustard is a non-native species originating from Europe and parts of Asia. It has become one of the worst invaders of Northeast and Midwest American forests which greatly reduces biodiversity. Garlic mustard can form dense stands that choke out native plants in the understory by controlling light, water, and nutrient resources. •

While there aren't many natural enemies to garlic mustard, manual removal can prevent its spread. In the spring when soil is soft, remove at least the upper half of the root to prevent a new stalk from forming.

This week, we will be sharing different types of invasive species to the Westchester area along with information on how they are harmful and what we can do to remove them. Invasive species pose a real threat to the native ecological environment, but by spreading awareness, we can all work to reduce this threat starting in our own yards and greenspaces. •

Today we are featuring the flatworm. Flatworms are widely known as being one of the worst invasive species in the US. Originating from New Guinea, flatworms reproduce quickly and are spread mostly by humans through horticultural trade. They quickly adapt and become predators to snails and other native invertebrae. Their presence in an ecosystem can disrupt nutrient cycling and significantly alter biodiversity. •

Controlling the spread of this invaisve species is critical, but extremely challenging. Scientists struggle with how to deal with flatworms as they are top-level predators and are therefore not easy to eradicate. Government regulations of imported plants are largely the only inhibitors for the spread of flatworms at this time.
